Roll With It is Frolic’s new collection about new foods vans we’ve witnessed out and about. We’re monitoring them down and striving dishes to carry you the 4-1-1.
A food stuff truck serving up Italian fare like cacio e pepe and ravioli with property-created pastas and sauces? It sounded like all my carb dreams came true.
Joja Hawai‘i rolled onto the Kaka‘ako scene a handful of weeks back with a daring assert: “We got the best noods in city.” I went on the lookout for the truck three times—once missing them by only 15 minutes—before last but not least scoring lunch. It was really worth the many hunts.
Joja is owned by the partner-and-spouse workforce of Jason and Joslyn Lee, as a result its title. The Lees employed to personal an Italian cafe in the Bay location and visited O‘ahu each year. When the pandemic strike, they had sold the cafe and have been about to signal a new lease on an older cafe they ended up renovating. The pandemic sent them in a distinctive direction—literally.
“We ended up planning a custom made foods truck in San Diego and had it transported to O‘ahu, then we offered our home and moved in this article,” Joslyn states. “Jason made all the noodles and sauces at the Italian restaurant, and now he’s executing those people exact same recipes in our foodstuff truck.”
Just after listening to that, I only have a person matter to say: “Mangia!”

At a look:
Joja has a significant pasta section, but you can also get smaller plates, entrées with rice and desserts. Weekly specials all through my go to provided a cioppino manufactured with shrimp, smoked Kamuela tomato broth and the fish of the day (Atlantic salmon). Apart from the gnocchi mushroom dish, Joja gets excitement for its fettucine shrimp with creamy white sauce manufactured from garlic confit which is pureed to accomplish a nuttier, richer flavor.
The truffle poke is worth a mention: pretty much a 50 percent pound of ‘ahi, 50 % a Hass avocado, scallions, ginger and sesame seeds blended with the truck’s property-manufactured ponzu sauce. It is a twist on sweet shoyu poke, with ginger notes and a lingering ponzu tartness.
- Gnocchi mushroom, $16. Joja’s greatest-vendor capabilities gentle, fluffy potato gnocchi in a white mushroom sauce with portobello, child portobello and button mushrooms, topped with balsamic reduction, basil and shaved Parmesan.
- Tiramisu, $5.
